10 Foods You Should Avoid During Pregnancy at All Costs

Pregnancy is indeed a miracle of life. It is one of the most delicate times of a woman’s life. So, it becomes crucial that she takes care of her health and also the baby.

One thing that remains same during the pregnancy is the cravings. However, it should be noted that whatever a mother eats should be healthy enough and must not harm her baby or mother’s health.

Here’s a list of food items that a pregnant woman should avoid at all costs.

Fish and seafood

Seawater faces a lot of contamination among which mercury is the most dangerous, and fishes are prone to have high mercury. It can be very harmful during pregnancy. Under-cooked or raw fish can be polluted with bacteria and parasites, which can have adverse effects on the health of the baby and can lead to miscarriage, premature delivery or have even fatal consequences.

Although, not all fish is bad. Fishes contain nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, which are important for the baby.

Raw meats and poultry

Uncooked meat contains Toxoplasma parasite, which can lead to flu-like symptoms. It can lead to miscarriage and fetal death during birth.

Unpasteurized milk

Unpasteurized milk has no nutritional benefits and is a source of many foodborne diseases. It contains bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria, E.coli which are harmful to mothers and babies.

Papaya

Papaya contains latex and can stimulate uterus contractions. It can be very unsettling for your stomach and creates a high risk of abortion.

Pineapples

Pineapples are rich in Bromelain, which soften the cervix and lead to early labor. It is not recommended, especially during the period of conception, as it increases the chances of abortion.

Excessive caffeine

Caffeine consumption during pregnancy should be limited to 200 mg per day. High intake leads to miscarriage or birth of low weight babies. Researches have also revealed that caffeine leads to premature birth and withdrawal symptoms in babies.

Sugar-rich foods

Sugar-rich foods create pregnancy discomforts, increase weight, and can lead to gestational diabetes. It also increases the risk of metabolic syndrome in babies. If, however, you have a craving for something sweet, opt for fruits such as pears, grapefruits etc.

Fatty foods

Fatty foods such as fast foods, fried, frozen and canned goods create a risk of heart diseases, obesity, and preterm labor. It can be very harmful to the baby’s health. Therefore, consumption of such food should be limited and controlled.

Sesame seeds

Sesame seeds have been proven to stimulate uterine contractions and are a natural potion for abortion. It can be fatal for the fetus, mainly, during the first trimester of pregnancy

Soft cheese

Although hard cheese like cheddar can be useful for health, soft cheeses are a threat to the baby’ life. They have a high risk of contracting bacteria that cause infections. Therefore, purified is the way to go.
